Fashionable Enclosure brand cabinets (F.E.) have been certified by the K.C.M.A. to meet standards set within the Environmental Stewardship Program. This program verifies that the shop is firmly committed to environmental quality and sustainability. In order to be certified, a cabinetmaker must use plywood that meets the lowest formaldehyde emissions standards, work with wood suppliers who use sustainable forestry practices, and utilize an energy conservation plan and recycling program to minimize waste where ever possible.
A larger part of being green is to purchase goods that are durable. Our products should last as long as the home. Most of today's manufacturers build items for the short term. If you purchase cabinets from us, you will have a product you can count on.
Our sales and design office saves a tremendous amount of paper by publishing information on the Web and our cabinet catalog on CD ROM. We utilize flat screen and energy efficient computer technologies to reduce our energy use, re-use shipping containers for samples, and recycle waste. Our sales office is more energy efficient than most local showrooms even though we reach out to the entire country. We continue to seek ways to improve our environmental stewardship.
Over the past 25 years we have sold almost every major cabinet brand. Most used MDF (also known as particle board, engineered wood, fiber board, etc.) construction. It is our experience that most MDF products do not withstand normal kitchen and bath environments. Particle board products tend to swell when exposed to moisture (like over a range, near a dishwasher, near a shower, etc.). Quality plywood retains its appearance better than the MDF products. We also find that using recommended modern fasteners in MDF products just do not hold as well as a wood screw in plywood. The sales pitch that MDF is better than plywood is a myth. We have seen countless MDF products that have caused homeowners much embarrassment.
We prefer to maintain an outstanding reputation and have chosen to promote durable goods. We do realize that quality plywood costs more than MDF, but the long term benefits far outweigh the costs.
