Measuring Your Space For Custom Cabinets

Measuring a room is an important step to good design and ordering cabinets.

We accept detailed building plans (blue prints) if they are accurate to final construction measurements. We also accept your measurement drawings. No cabinets will be ordered until accurate measurements are confirmed. Getting us proper measurements at the beginning design stage will greatly speed up the design time and the custom cabinet ordering process.

These are tips for measuring your room:

How To Measure Your Space

Measuring a room is not difficult but if you are not familiar with accurately using a measuring tape, we suggest you ask for help from a cabinet installer or building professional. The above video will show you how to measure and create a detailed drawing that can be used by us for kitchen design purposes.

Check Room For Squareness

four foot folding tri-square

A four foot folding tri-square is great for checking corners of a room to see if the walls are square 90 degree angles. If you use a smaller square it probably will not be accurate. Tri-squares can be purchased at building supply stores.

Are The Corners Square?

Most rooms have 90 degree corners and it is important to see if the room was built square. Since cabinets are built square and must be hung tight to the wall, the walls should be as square as possible. A minor variation from being 90 degrees square can usually be overcome, but walls that are way out of being square can make installation very difficult. We can build cabinets with extra deep sides that can be trimmed to help cabinet installers cope with rooms that have largely out of square corners.

If you do not have a four foot tri-square (shown in the image) you can also measure the wall to see if it is square. Here is how to do that:

  1. Measure 3 feet from the corner of one wall and make a mark.
  2. Measure 4 feet from the adjacent wall on the same corner. Make a mark.
  3. With straight measuring tape, span the distance between the two marks. If the straight line between the two marks measures 5 feet, the corner is a perfect 90° angle.

If you determine that the corner is less than a 1/4 inch out of square, you are within a reasonable amount for installing cabinets. If the wall is more than 1/4 inch out, you should tell your designer how much out of square the room is and in what direction the wall is headed (inward our outward).

If Walls Are Angled

If the walls in your room are angled, we need to know the angle of the walls. You can determine the angle by using an adjustable angle finder.

Adjustable digital angle finder

An adjustable digital angle finder can be obtained from most building supply companies.

How To Send Measurements

If you are not sure that your measurements are correct, please ask your cabinet installer or building professional to check them before you send them to us or they can be checked prior to ordering cabinets.

You can scan your measurement drawings and create a PDF file or images using your three in one printer/scanner. Another method would be to photograph your drawings and send us clear readable images. You can email the PDF or images to us. If you have hired a KitchenPlace designer, please contact them for the correct email address to send them to. If you need help, please give us a call at 774-355-3580.

If you do not have a scanner for your drawings, most large office supply companies (like Staples) offer a scanning service. You would bring your drawings to them and they can create PDF files or images that you can email to us. Most libraries, schools, and businesses have scanners and may be willing to create a PDF file or image files that you can email to us.
